COLONEL JAMES ALEXANDER GRANTE (ACTIVE 1745-6)
Map of Great Britain, 1745-6
c.1749RCIN 729135
This plan of Prince Charles Edward’s progress around Scotland and northern England is based on a map by James Grante, an Irish engineer who was Colonel of the Jacobite Artillery. It was engraved in Edinburgh and sold in London to Jacobite sympathisers. An impression still in the Hanoverian Secretary of State’s papers suggests that its publication was the subject of government attention.
