This map shows the uneven terrain and fork of woodland that made the Battle of Hastenbeck so difficult to fight. Cumberland’s defeat at Hastenbeck, on the border of Hanover, was a severe blow, leaving the Electorate unprotected against France. Much of the Hanoverian administration and silver was evacuated to Britain. Cumberland subsequently signed a peace treaty with the French, much to George II’s fury.
