SIR JOHN VANBRUGH (1664-1726)
St James's Palace: 'Apartment for the King adjoining the old house, based on an overall layout'
1714RCIN 926303
St James’s Palace was the early Hanoverians’ principal London residence. This survey plan records the layout of the building’s first floor around 1714, and advertises a modest extension to the south wing. Vanbrugh’s architectural design forms part of a larger set of proposals for St James’s, none of which came to fruition. Vanbrugh has included a small flap at top right so alternative schemes can be presented on the same sheet.
Probably made for presentation to George I
