JOHN WOOTTON (C. 1682-1764)
The Death of the Stag
Signed and dated 1737RCIN 407815
This shows Wootton at his best – loose energetic touch, particularly soft and suggestive in the distances, and a clever separation of the elegant company from the active huntsmen and writhing animals. The Prince’s huntsmen wear his livery; he and his companions wear the uniform he himself had devised for such convivial occasions.
Probably commissioned by Frederick, Prince of Wales
