Works for Joseph Smith's villa at Mogliano

These two paintings belong to a series of 11 commissioned by Joseph Smith for his Villa at Mogliano, probably to serve as overdoors. In each the two Italian artists depict a monument of Palladian design set within an imaginative Italianate landscape. Only the buildings are English, allowing the British Consul in Venice to demonstrate that his native land was not entirely barbarous. Commissioned by Joseph Smith and bought from him in 1762 by George III Cats 234 and 233
