While the Endurance was stationary, the men exercised and trained the dog teams for the crossing of Antarctica. Hurley found the dogs of extra practical use in his role as photographer. He was able to roam much more widely in search of good photographs, although there was a constant risk that the ice floes would open up between him and the ship.
