Under Atkinson’s command, a search party set out on 29 October 1912 to discover the fate of Scott and his team. On 12 November, they located the tent containing the frozen bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers. After retrieving the personal items, including the flags, diaries, letters and photographic negatives, a cairn was constructed over the bodies. Scott had made his last diary entry on 29 March 1912. He knew they were only 11 miles from a food depot, but the severe weather prevented them from leaving the tent. It is believed that Scott was the last of the three men to die. On the right is a smaller cairn, marked by Scott’s sledge. Tryggve Gran’s skis were added to that cairn. Gran skied back to base on Scott’s skis.
