HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

The Terra Nova in a gale

Mar 1912

RCIN 2580002

After transporting Scott and his team in late 1910, Terra Nova left Antarctica in February 1911, returning in January 1912 with much-needed supplies. The ship had to leave again before she was frozen in, so on 3 March Terra Nova departed, leaving a small group behind who were waiting for Scott to return from the South Pole. Ponting made this image on the journey back to New Zealand.
