LUCAS CRANACH THE ELDER (C.1472-1553)
Apollo and Diana
c.1526RCIN 407294
The sun god Apollo, admired for his moral standing and physical beauty, is shown with his twin sister Diana, goddess of the moon, known for chastity and hunting. Cranach took ideas from contemporary prints of the same subject but created a new interpretation of the theme, relating the figures to the primeval forest and meticulously painted landscape beyond.
