ATTRIBUTED TO HUGO VAN DER GOES (C. 1440-1482)
Christ on the Cross
c.1475RCIN 912951
This is one of few drawings attributed to Hugo van der Goes, whose works were admired as much in Italy as in his native Netherlands. It may have been made as a standard model to be kept in the workshop, or in preparation for a particular painting. The emotive image of the suffering Christ was one of the central elements of fifteenth-century devotion.
