FRANÇOIS CLOUET (C. 1520-1572)

Elizabeth of Valois, later Queen of Spain (1545-1568)

circa 1549

RCIN 420046

Elizabeth of Valois, daughter of Henry II of France, was proposed as a bride for the young Edward VI. Clouet’s miniature may have been produced in the course of the marriage negotiations which took place between 1549 and 1553. Ultimately, these proved fruitless as Edward VI died in 1553; Elizabeth later married Philip II of Spain.
