REMIGIUS VAN LEEMPUT (D. 1675)

Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII and Jane Seymour

Dated 1667

RCIN 405750

This copy of the Whitehall Mural serves as a record of Holbein’s famous wall painting (destroyed by fire in 1698). It shows Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour, standing in front of Henry’s parents. The inscription on the central plinth praises the achievements of Henry VII and Henry VIII, the first two monarchs of the Tudor dynasty. The original painting depicted the figures at life size on the wall of the Privy Chamber at Whitehall Palace, where Henry VIII received important guests.
