These studies are of a capital and column in the church of S. Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome. They are attributed to Philibert de l’Orme, architect to Henry II of France. L’Orme worked in Rome from 1533 to 1536, making careful studies of the classical buildings he saw. His later reuse of these in the buildings he designed for members of the French court was a key factor in the introduction of Renaissance architecture to France.
