PLUTARCH (C. 46-C. 120) SIMON BOURGOUYN, TRANSLATOR (ACTIVE C. 1503-32)

Lives of Scipio and Pompey

c. 1510

RCIN 1047552

This is one of the earliest known translations of any of Plutarch’s Lives into French. Pompey visited Mytilene on his way home to Rome after a lengthy war in the Black Sea. He was so impressed by its theatre that he had an artist copy its design, so that he could build a larger version back in Rome.
