HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Margaret Giggs (1508-1570)

c.1526-7

RCIN 912229

Although identified as ‘Mother Iak’ in an eighteenth-century hand, this drawing probably shows Margaret Giggs (1508-70), one of Thomas More’s adopted daughters. Margaret received a classical education in More’s household, and was to marry her Greek tutor, Sir John Clements. Here she is shown in a fur cap, rather than the headdress which she wears in Holbein’s sketch of the group portrait.
