These portraits are signed ‘HB’ and are similar to other portraits attributed to Hans Brosamer. Possibly trained in Cranach’s workshop in Wittenberg, Brosamer later produced paintings, engravings and woodcuts in centres such as Nuremberg, Fulda and Erfurt. This couple were presented to Queen Caroline as portraits of Holbein and his wife by Holbein himself.
