ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

St Jerome in his study

1514

RCIN 800072

The learned St Jerome translated the Bible into Latin in the fourth century, and Dürer shows him here as a scholar in his study. The lion at Jerome’s feet refers to his taming of this beast by removing a thorn from its paw; the cardinal’s hat hanging on the wall refers to his role as papal secretary. Like the Knight, this is one of Dürer’s three ‘master engravings’.
