PIETER COECK VAN AELST (1502-50)
The Adoration of the Kings
c.1530RCIN 405784
Some of the figures and the classical architecture show that the artist had studied Italian art in Rome, particularly Raphael, as well as art in Antwerp. The ruined palatial setting symbolises the replacement of the Old Law of David with the New Law of Jesus Christ. The outstretched arms of the Christ Child prefigure the cross.
