ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

The Bath House

c.1496

RCIN 800195

Bath houses were communal meeting places for both washing and socialising. Here, Dürer shows the visitors to a male bath house drinking and listening to music. The man seated drinking may be a portrait of Dürer’s friend, the scholar Willibald Pirckheimer, while the figure leaning against the suggestive standpipe resembles the artist himself.
