FOLLOWER OF MARINUS VAN REYMERSWAELE (C. 1490/5-C. 1567)
The Misers
1548-51RCIN 405707
The two figures have traditionally been called ‘The Misers’ but are most likely tax collectors. The scene is intended to amuse the viewer with its caricature-like features and archaic dress. However, the underlying message is a warning against greed, because life is short, as symbolised by the candle which will soon burn out. The scene was very popular and at least sixty variants survive.
