SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535)

Utopia

1518

RCIN 1086970

Utopia, from the Greek ou topos (no place), depicts the society of a fictional island and its customs. Thomas More used it to comment on and criticise some of the social and political ideas of his day. Holbein’s frontispiece incorporates Froben’s printer’s mark of a hand holding a caduceus (a rod wound round with two snakes).
