LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

A costume study for a masque

c.1517-18

RCIN 912575

The elderly Leonardo travelled to France in 1516. His work for King Francis I included the provision of costume designs for court masques. This example shows a masquerader in the showy dress of a mercenary soldier, and may have been made for the entertainment at Romorantin in January 1518, held in honour of Federico Gonzaga of Mantua.
