ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

A Knight, Death and the Devil

1513

RCIN 800104

This knight may personify Christian fortitude in the face of sin, represented by the figures stalking behind the rider’s horse. The print is one of the three ‘master engravings’ that Dürer made in 1513 and 1514. These prints, made on particularly large plates, demonstrate Dürer’s skill at producing a range of effects using only black and white.
