This is amongst the earliest portrait miniatures to be painted, and may also be the earliest surviving portrait from life of Henry VIII by his court artist. The King, aged about 35, was experimenting with a beard. Here Horenbout shows him bearded and RCIN 420010 shows him bare-faced.
