Baron (1906 – 56)
The photographer Baron – whose real name was Sterling Henry Nahum – was best known as a photographer of dancers, film stars and debutantes. As a personal friend of Prince Philip, he photographed many significant moments in The Queen’s life, including her marriage to His Royal Highness in 1947. Baron also took the first official photographs of Prince Charles following his birth in 1948.
Baron created idealised, romantic and glamorous portraits of the young Queen. While these two examples of his work appear formal and traditional, especially when compared with the work of his contemporaries Cecil Beaton and Anthony Armstrong-Jones, they allow the youth, radiance and beauty of the new Queen to shine through.
