Canaletto specialised in views of Venice for travellers from northern Europe. He also painted and drew architectural fantasies known as capricci, sometimes incorporating topographical elements – here the Venetian customs-house and Santa Maria della Salute are visible in the distance. George III acquired hundreds of works by Canaletto when in 1762 he purchased the collection of Consul Smith, Canaletto’s agent and greatest patron.
