The pieces shown here are from a magnificent bleu céleste service which formed part of the diplomatic gifts given in 1783 by Louis XVI to the British Ambassador to the Court of Versailles, the Duke of Manchester, and his wife. This was in recognition of his successful negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles that year, which brought to an end the War of American Independence.
