SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN 1577 - ANTWERP 1640)
Milkmaids with cattle in a landscape, 'The Farm at Laken'
c.1617-18RCIN 405333
This landscape, painted by Rubens when he returned to Antwerp from Italy, reveals the artist’s love of his native countryside. The church at Laken, north of Brussels, seen in the upper right of the painting, was one of the principal pilgrimage sites of the Catholic Southern Netherlands. When the painting was acquired by George IV in 1821 it was considered one of the finest works in his collection.
