Although Isaac Oliver is known chiefly for his portrait miniatures, a number of carefully finished drawings survive. The eroticism of this drawing is unusual for the artist and indeed for British art at this time. Oliver was a member of the household of Anne of Denmark, consort of King James VI & I, but this work is not documented in the Royal Collection until the reign of her grandson, James VII & II.
