FRANS HALS (ANTWERP C. 1580-HAARLEM 1666)

Portrait of a Man

Dated 1630

RCIN 405349

Frans Hals worked for most of his life in the Dutch town of Haarlem, where he painted leading members of society. The relaxed pose and elegant dress of the man in this portrait suggests that he is a successful merchant in his prime. Hals’s rapid technique and vivid brushwork, characteristic of the artist, capture the confidence and lively expression of the sitter.
