Lucian Freud was one of the foremost figurative artists of the second half of the twentieth century, celebrated for his intensely observed portraits. Here he turns his gaze upon himself in a large and powerful etching. Freud was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1993 and presented this self-portrait to The Queen for the Order of Merit series.
