NICOLAS POUSSIN (1594-1665)

The Triumph of Pan

c.1635

RCIN 911995

This drawing corresponds in its details to a painting of a bacchanalian scene that Poussin executed in 1636 for Cardinal Richelieu, Minister of State to Louis XIII and the most important French collector of his day. Poussin was born in Normandy but travelled to Italy around the age of thirty and spent most of the rest of his life in Rome.
