The trophy of Marius: front view
c.1625-30RCIN 908249
The so-called Trophies of Marius are a pair of large marble sculptures that probably formed part of a monument celebrating a Roman military triumph of c.100 AD. They have stood on the Capitoline Hill in Rome since 1590. This drawing comes from the ‘Paper Museum’ of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657), who commissioned thousands of drawings to create a visual encyclopedia of antiquities and natural history.
