GEORGE STUBBS (1724-1806)

A Rough Dog

Signed and dated 1790

RCIN 405001

Stubbs is most renowned as a painter of horses, but this depiction of a large, amiable dog lying under a tree in a rocky landscape with a glimpse of the sea beyond is a reminder of the scope of his abilities. It was recorded in a store room at Carlton House but was moved in 1822 to the King’s Lodge, Windsor.

Painted for George IV
