Carlton House: The Blue Velvet Room

c. 1816

RCIN 922184

The Blue Velvet Room, on the south (garden) front of the Principal Floor, was hung with some of the Prince Regent’s finest Dutch paintings, including Rembrandt’s The Shipbuilder and his Wife, which can be seen in this view above a Sèvres garniture. The paintings were shown to good effect against the rich blue velvet panels, bordered in peach and gold.

Acquired by George IV
