HENRY BONE (1755-1834)

Cymon and Iphigenia (after Reynolds)

Signed and dated 1806

RCIN 404290

This enamel copy was commissioned in 1806 when the original painting still belonged to Reynolds’s niece, the Marchioness of Thomond. She later gave it to the Prince Regent, perhaps in acknowledgment of his admiration for it. The scene, from Boccaccio’s Decameron, shows the beguiling nude form of Iphigenia discovered by the shepherd Cymon, as she sleeps beside a stream.

Painted for George IV, 1806
