Emperor Augustus (63BC-14AD)

eighteenth century

RCIN 2139

Augustus was remembered as a skilled politician and became Rome’s first Emperor in 27 BC. His reign was regarded as a golden age of universal peace and finest culture. On his death he was deified and worshipped as a god. With the rise of neo-classicism in eighteenth-century France, busts such as this enjoyed renewed popularity.

Purchased for George IV in Paris, 1818
