Fan depicting 'Baccus and Ariadne on the island of Naxos'

c. 1780

RCIN 25077

According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Ariadne was abandoned on the island of Naxos by her lover, Theseus, after she had helped him to escape from the Minotaur’s labyrinth. This fan leaf, based on a painting by Guido Reni completed in 1640, depicts the moment when she is rescued by Bacchus, the god of wine.
