Juno visiting Aeolus, and Neptune calming the tempest

1540

RCIN 905497

The subject of this medal design is derived from Virgil’s Aeneid. On the right Juno, queen of the gods, instructs the wind god, Aeolus, to create a tempest to disrupt the Trojan hero Aeneas’s voyage to Carthage. Juno’s action angers Neptune (left), god of the sea, prompting him to calm the storm.
