CHARLES BEALE GUNNER (ACTIVE 1937)

Queen Elizabeth's coronation fan

1937

RCIN 25323

This fan was the gift of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers to Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother; 1900-2002) at the time of the coronation in 1937. It was made by Charles Beale Gunner (of 169 Regent Street, London), using materials from the British Empire. By this date, the use of fans was already in decline. The scale of this particular fan, which was vastly over-sized for someone of small stature, meant that it could rarely have been used – and even more infrequently opened – by its recipient.
