Captain Horatio Ross (1801–86) was one of the leading sportsmen of the Victorian age, winning many awards for his shooting abilities. He was also an early and talented advocate of photography, helping to establish the Photographic Society of Scotland in 1856. Fenton, who photographed Ross several times, served in the Volunteer Rifle Corps alongside Ross.
