Woodruff, who came to Prince Albert’s notice via the Duke of Devonshire, specialised in the inlaying of Derbyshire black marble. Gruner designed this and a companion table top for Osborne, using the bold, clear colours that marked the decoration of the house. Both tables were awarded Prize Medals at the Great Exhibition.
