Home (The Return from the Crimea)
Signed and dated 1859RCIN 406954
A wounded soldier returns to the warmth of his home and is welcomed by his wife and mother, whose clinging pose calls to mind a Christian lamentation scene. Gruesome souvenirs of war, including a Russian enemy helmet, contrast with symbols of a more peaceful life – the sleeping infant and fishing rod suspended overhead.
Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert at Christmas 1859
