Portrait of a Young Man with a Rosary
Dated 1509RCIN 405758
Hans Baldung was Dürer’s foremost assistant. His portraits are remarkable for their psychological insight. The device at the top of the portrait, a confrontation between a bird of prey and an owl, has been interpreted as representing the battle between good and evil.
Ceded to Prince Albert with the Oettingen-Wallerstein collection in 1847.
