Queen Victoria was the fourth sovereign to sit to Francis Chantrey for a bust, but he declared that it was ‘very difficult to make a bust of a Queen’, especially one so young. The sculptor’s last work, this was considered by Prince Albert as one of his favourite portraits of his wife.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in October 1838 and completed in 1841
