Richard I, Coeur de Lion
1853RCIN 44114
This may have been intended by Queen Victoria as a memento of the Crystal Palace, where Marochetti’s large-scale statue dominated the entrance. Prince Albert later supported the campaign to have the work cast in bronze for Westminster, declaring to xenophobic opponents: ‘it is the work not the artist [that] enlists sympathy’.
Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1853
