Saint Jerome in Penitence
c. 1480-85RCIN 403469
Perugino’s high reputation rested on his link with Raphael, who was thought to have been trained by him. Before Queen Victoria acquired the painting the canvas was cut, probably on all sides, and laid on panel. St Jerome is beating his breast with a stone and may have once gazed up at a crucifix on the right, now lost.
Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1846
