The greatest poetess of antiquity is depicted in a frenzy of grief at her rejection by a handsome seafarer, Phaon. This is one of a very small number of pagan subjects by Triqueti, a devout Protestant who had worked for the French royal family and successfully sought the patronage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert following the Revolution of 1848.
