The Almsdeeds of Dorcas

The dressmaker Dorcas is noted in the New Testament for her charitable deeds. Here she is depicted handing out clothes and food to the poor. The picture is signed in monogram (WCTD) and dated in the lower right hand corner on the gourd, here being used as a water bottle, a traditional attribute of Christian pilgrimage.
Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1855
