Two full-size casts of The Eagle Slayer were prominent in the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. The shepherd seeks revenge on an eagle for having killed one of his lambs, an allegory on man’s powerlessness. The Art Union of London, supported by Prince Albert, aimed to promote and distribute selected works of art more widely.
